Internet retailer Amazon.com plans to build a warehouse in Lexington County that could bring more than 1,200 new jobs to the region. Amazon executive Fred Kiga announced the company's plans Tuesday after the Lexington County Council approved incentives that included tax breaks and donating 90 acres of land near Interstates 77 and 26. Kiga says construction should begin next month. The warehouse is expected to open before Christmas 2011. Kiga says up to 2,500 temporary jobs could be added during the holidays along with the 1,249 jobs the warehouse will have at full capacity. Gov. Mark Sanford says Amazon's decision, along with Boeing's aircraft assembly plant in North Charleston, shows some of the nation's biggest companies want to locate in South Carolina.
