YORK COUNTY - A piece of American history has arrived in York County - a steel beam from the World Trade Center. As part of a two-year process, members of the Bethesda Volunteer Fire Department traveled to New York City to pick up a steel beam from the World Trade Center in the September 11th, 2001 attack.
More than 2,500 people died in the attack on the Trade, including 343 firemen. Now a memorial is being erected in York County in their honor.'It's just a memorial for them,' said Judge Bob Davenport with the Bethesda Volunteer Fire Department. 'To let them know their sacrifice will never be forgotten.'
The beam was welcome to York County by a massive escort of emergency responders. More than 30 firetrucks, officers from every law enforcement agency in York County, EMS and Emergency Management joined the Rolling Thunder SC Group #1 to provide the escort into South Carolina.
The group escorted the beam down Interstate 77, onto Cherry Road and past the Bethesda Volunteer Fire Department, before stopping at the York County Fire Training Grounds off Ogden Road in Rock Hill.
